Loraine Leeson
Loraine Leeson is a visual artist and director of cSPACE, an organisation which uses the arts, media and cyberspace to support local communities and young people in the expression of individual and collective visions and aspirations as a means of effecting social change. Since the late 70's her work has involved engagement with communities around a variety of issues including regeneration, identity and education. Most of this has been done through organisations which she has co-founded and directed for this purpose, including the Docklands Community Poster Project and The Art of Change. During the last fifteen years this process has increasingly involved digital media work with young people and schools. Current projects include VOLCO, an evolving planet in cyberspace created by children and young people co-operating across the world. bgbgb

Another is Cascade, a mentoring programme linking the fields of further and higher education with local schools around issues of regeneration which combines art production with interactive learning. A recent Cascade project The Young Person's Guide to the Royal Docks culminated in a web based resource launched at the Museum in Docklands, London in March 2007.

Loraine's work features frequently in publications as an example of good practice in socially engaged art. She has presented papers at many conferences and events, nationally and internationally, and during 2006/7 in Munich, Granollers (Spain), Dublin, Belfast, London, Palma (Majorca), Beirut and Harvard. Her work has been exhibited at the Tate, Serpentine, Whitechapel, ICA and other UK galleries, as well as in New York, Boston, Colorado, Toronto, Nova Scotia, Banff, Barcelona and Vienna. A major retrospective exhibition documenting thirty years of her practice opened in Berlin during 2005 and has since toured to London, Toronto and Dublin. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of East London.
